The NFL dropped a bombshell on the sports media world yesterday when they revealed that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady destroyed his cell phone immediately prior to it being requested as a piece of evidence for investigator Ted Wells.
Today, however, a close friend of Brady, Aaron Shea, revealed that Brady has been doing this for quite a while.
“I know every couple of years he has changed phones, and he has been doing this since he won his first Super Bowl,” Shea said via text.
Shea is a former tight end in the NFL who played with the Cleveland Browns from 2000-2005 and San Diego Chargers in 2006. Shea was drafted out of Michigan, where he was a teammate and roommate with the soon-to-be four time-Super Bowl champ.
When pressed further, Shea mentioned that Brady has had to change his phones regularly due to his increasing celebrity and recent hacks that have exposed the private lives of many other high profile individuals.
“Is that the same as destroying his phone?” Shea said. “I don’t know. But I know he gets rid of his regularly. If I were him and married to the woman he’s married to, I know I would get rid of my phone after all these high-profile people have had their phones and personal information hacked.”
Brady’s phone was requested by the NFL as a key piece of evidence regarding his role in the Deflategate scandal of last year’s AFC Championship game.
Brady was originally suspended four games by the NFL for his role, and yesterday the NFL announced they were upholding the suspension due to his lack of cooperation and destruction of evidence.
Brady and his team are planning to take the case to court in hopes of exonerating him legally.
Court filings and dates have yet to be announced by Brady and the NFLPA.
