Airlines dedicating Kansas City-Las Vegas flights to Taylor Swift, Super Bowl teams

Count American Airlines and United among those falling for America's most popular couple.

With the Kansas City Chiefs set to play in Super Bowl LVIII, the airlines are having fun with the union of pop superstar Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce.

CNN, among multiple media outlets, reported that American is adding two flights to its Kansas City to Las Vegas route on Super Bowl weekend with clever nods to the singer and tight end.

On Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, flight 1989 will travel from Kansas City to Las Vegas. The number is in reference to Swift's birth year and her 2014 album "1989." (Swift re-recorded a new version of that album, which was released in 2023.) On Monday, Feb. 12, the day after the Super Bowl, Flight 87 - in homage to Kelce's jersey number - will make the return trip from Las Vegas to Kansas City.

Not to be outdone, United is getting caught up in the romance, but they are also giving nods to the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers for flights leaving the Bay Area for Las Vegas.

Though the 49ers-dedicated planes would be easy for the Niner Faithful to get behind, the AA flights are the most emblematic of America's love of both celebrity and football, as told by the airline's spokesperson:

“The excitement surrounding this year’s sporting events has never been greater,” an American Airlines spokesperson told CNN. “You could say that after tonight’s games, we are in our football era, and we are thrilled to provide direct flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas. To our customers who are huge sports fans, look what you made us do.”

Chiefs fans and Swifties alike better hope their team wins their third title in five years, otherwise, those will be some awkward flights back to western Missouri.
