Al Michaels confirms announcing plans for 2024 NFL season

Legendary play-by-play broadcaster Al Michaels confirmed that he plans to continue calling "Thursday Night Football" games for Prime Video through the 2024 NFL season.

"I feel good," Michaels told Mike Freeman of USA Today. "I feel healthy. I feel fine. I told Amazon that I'd do three years and next year will be three, and I'm definitely doing it. We'll see after that."

Andrew Marchand of the New York Post noted back in November that Michaels had one season remaining on his Amazon contract that pays the 79-year-old "an estimated $500k to $1M per game." That was before Marchand reported that NBC had removed Michaels from its upcoming playoff coverage.

Both Michaels and former NFL head coach Tony Dungy were ripped by fans and media analysts for allegedly lacking enthusiasm while calling last January's wild-card playoff game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars that included the Jaguars erasing a 27-0 deficit. Such criticisms of Michaels' work have continued throughout the ongoing campaign.

Michaels declined to comment about being pulled from NBC's playoff broadcasts.

"I still love this job," Michaels told Freeman. "I still get a charge out of going into a stadium and watching the best in the world do what they do. I'm still really happy so that's the big thing."

According to Marchand, Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle will handle postseason play-by-play duties for NBC instead of Michaels. Meanwhile, Michaels went viral during the broadcast of Thursday's prime-time game between the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns when he humorously referenced the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal upon hearing what he called "pounding on that trash can."

Michaels showed in that moment he still has his fastball.

"Amazon has been really great to me and I'm appreciative that I've been a part of helping them grow their NFL presence," Michaels added during his chat with Freeman.
