Alabama's Najee Harris: Running back is the best position on the field

Alabama running back Najee Harris, who is expected to be a first-round pick in this week's NFL Draft, joined Team Whistle for the latest installment of "No Days Off" to discuss his upbringing, workout routine and more ahead of the big day.

At the end of his final season at Alabama, which concluded with a national title, Harris said he went straight to Texas to begin training in preparation for the draft.

"There's a transition from college football to the league," Harris said. "It's two different trainings. For college football, you're playing for the football season. Now it's more of a track meet."

Brent Callaway, Harris' performance trainer, said the star running back was in Texas training about 48 hours after the championship game, taking "no days off" to the next level.

"The motivation is to do better," Harris said of his rigorous training routine. "Like, just to keep improving each day."

Running backs are often passed on until the end of the first round. In some years, players at the position aren't selected until the second round or later.

Harris is projected to be taken somewhere in the 20s. (ESPN has him going to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 24.) He explained why he believes the running back position isn't considered as valuable as it once was:

"The running backs position is so devalued because of how they say you can find one later in the draft that does the same thing," Harris said. "But it's like, you can find one later in the draft that's good at some things.

"For running back, it's like, you have to pass, catch, pass block, run between the tackles, you have to do a lot of stuff. Me personally, I feel like that's the hardest position on the field and it's the best position on the field."

Harris has certainly done it all on the field. In his final season at Alabama, he ran for 1,466 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also caught 43 passes for 425 yards and four scores.

His versatility makes him a very valuable running back. Now that he's on his way to the NFL, his next dream is to "dominate" the league.
