Alex Smith reveals why he didn't reach out to Dak Prescott after injury

Dak Prescott is out for the rest of the year after suffering a gruesome ankle injury, and he has received his fair share of well-wishes from fans, teammates and opponents. One guy he did not hear from was Washington quarterback Alex Smith, who admitted he didn't reach out to the Cowboys quarterback because he didn't want to freak him out.

"I feel like I've become a little bit of an expert with the lower leg, so I knew it looked like his ankle immediately," Smith said on "The Dan Patrick Show." "I've been thinking about him a lot. I've checked up on him through our mutual friends. I thought a lot about shooting him a text, but part of me also didn't want to scare the hell out of him by shooting him a text and getting him thinking he might be headed down this road. I'll let the infection risk kind of get out of the way and hopefully reach out here soon."

Smith is certainly no stranger to horrific lower-body injuries. He suffered a broken fibula and tibia in November 2018. Many assumed his career was all but over (understandably, as he almost lost his leg), but less than two years later, Smith was able to pull off one of the most impressive comebacks in NFL history, playing in an NFL game for the first time since the injury.

When Smith does eventually text Prescott, it will likely help the young quarterback get motivated about getting back on the field as quickly as possible. But for now, Smith is going to keep his respectful distance and focus on helping Washington win some football games after the team has lost four straight.
