All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff, Washington Football Team not expected to reach deal

All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and the Washington Football Team are not expected to reach a long-term deal by the July 22 deadline for franchise-tagged players, sources tell NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Scherff will play a second straight season under the franchise tag, making a little over $18 million, before hitting unrestricted free agency in March 2022.

The 29-year-old Iowa product and four-time Pro Bowler has played his entire career for Washington and has been a key piece to the offensive line. He hasn't played a full season since 2016 due to injuries, including an MCL sprain, but had a solid enough 2020 campaign when healthy that earned him his first All-Pro nod. If he can stay healthy, it is expected he'll have no trouble landing a lucrative deal when unrestricted free agency opens up.
