All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu to talk new contract with Chiefs after NFL Draft?

The Kansas City Chiefs made a big splash on Friday by acquiring Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown from the Baltimore Ravens. Next up for general manager Brett Veach is working on a contract extension for All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu, who is on the final year of his deal

Veach told reporters that he and Mathieu will have plenty of time to talk terms of a potential agreement after next weekend's NFL Draft.

"I don't know if there's a timeline," Veach said of contract discussions, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "Last year, we were able to get a lot of our guys done, and they were all during the summer. For us, we were really attacking free agency, preparing for the draft. I can't say we've had extensive dialogue, but I'm sure once the draft is behind us, we'll have time to address where we are as a team after the draft and moving forward. I'm sure we'll have much more dialogue once we get (more) into the spring and summer."

Mathieu turns 29 years old next month and is a key part of a defense that helped the Chiefs compete in back-to-back Super Bowls. Patra added that Kansas City could use the franchise tag to retain Mathieu's rights in 2022, but Brown is also out of contract following the upcoming season and could be tagged if he and the Chiefs don't come to terms on an extension this spring or summer.
