Is Baker Mayfield not the quarterback who will lead the Browns to success? Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Analyst: Browns need to accept Baker Mayfield is 'an average to below-average quarterback'

When Baker Mayfield was taken no. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 draft, the team hoped it would be the solution to all their problems. But in his third season, it's starting to look more and more like he may be the cause of their problems.

And ESPN's Marcus Spears says that it's time for the Browns to realize that he isn't going to be a franchise savior, he's, at best, a pretty average quarterback with some below-average tendencies.

"Baker Mayfield is an average to below-average quarterback," Spears said on "Get Up."

Spears said that Mayfield could get his career back on track, as he is only 25 years old, but said that it may be best if he does that somewhere other than Cleveland.

"Do you need a change of scenery?" asked Spears. "Possibly."

It's hard to argue with Spears at this point. The Browns have among the most talented offenses in the entire NFL, yet they still seem to fall short of expectations time and time again, most recently getting beat down by the Pittsburgh Steelers in embarrassing fashion. And given the level of talent on the roster, the team could see Mayfield's shortcomings and decide the best move is grabbing a new quarterback that could make the most of the plethora of weapons on offense.

If the Browns decide the best decision is to move on from Mayfield, they could do it with relative ease, as his rookie contract is set to expire after next season.
