At this time last season, plenty of Penn State fans didn’t feel Sean Clifford was worthy of making an NFL roster.

So when the Packers took him in the fifth round  this past April, it surprised many.

Imagine if he became the team’s starter as a rookie?

According to a former NFL QB and current analyst, it could happen. Green Bay’s offense isn’t getting it done right now. The team’s averaging 17 points per game and just 3.17 points in the first half. Green Bay is 2-5 overall and has lost four in a row, the most recent one being a 24-10 loss to the Vikings at Lambeau Field this past Sunday.

The current starting QB is Jordan Love, who’s in his fourth NFL season but first as a starter due to Aaron Rodgers being traded to the Jets over the offseason. NBC’s Chris Simms feels that Love’s leash might not be too long, and Clifford, the current QB2, could be getting a shot.

“The inconsistencies of the Packers offense, it’s even more than I thought it’d be,” Simms said Monday, per Fansided’s Lombardi Ave. “I wonder with them if they’re going to start talking or getting Sean Clifford ready to go. ‘Hey, you might need to come in here if we go through another first half like we did yesterday where Jordan Love and the offense are that inept.’”

Clifford has appeared in one game this season, throwing a pass in Green Bay’s win at Chicago. The Packers are in Pittsburgh less than two weeks from now. Could the QB matchup for that Nov. 12 game be former Penn State QB Clifford against former Pitt star Kenny Pickett?
