Analyst highlights why Cowboys should re-sign former Pro Bowl RB

Some still believe running back Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys reuniting is inevitable.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently outlined 14 moves that could or should happen during the late window of the offseason, including Elliott re-signing with the Cowboys.

"The only moves the Cowboys have made to replace Ezekiel Elliott are to sign Ronald Jones II and use a sixth-round pick on Deuce Vaughn," wrote Barnwell. "For a Cowboys team that already has plenty of hesitation about featuring Tony Pollard on 30 snaps per game, bringing back Elliott on a cheaper deal would provide security at one of the team's thinnest positions."

Pollard, a 2023 Pro Bowler, should be ready for training camp after suffering an ankle injury in a playoff loss to the 49ers, which required surgery. Nonetheless, the Cowboys should prioritize his durability.

Dallas solidifying RB2 takes the pressure off Pollard. Elliott fills this hole and capitalizes on scoring opportunities. Last season he rushed for 12 TDs in 15 games, which led the Cowboys and tied for fifth in the NFL.

Although the Cowboys released Elliott without offering him a pay cut, owner Jerry Jones recently said he hasn't "ruled out" re-signing the 27-year-old RB.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill Jr. reported the three-time Pro Bowler returning to Dallas is unlikely, and he had a couple of options that he planned to pursue after the draft.

Aside from reported interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, significant offers or deals have yet to materialize for Elliott.

The Cowboys and Elliott should consider a reunion. He still provides decent production and could satisfy an essential role on a team trying to end a 27-year Super Bowl drought.
