Analyst suggest Lions could look to draft 'developmental' QB

While it appears the Detroit Lions are just fine rolling with Jared Goff as their starting quarterback, ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid thinks there’s a good chance the team uses one of its nine draft picks on a signal caller.

During a recent appearance on “SportsCenter,” Reid offered up his best guess as to which QB Detroit could be targeting and which round he thinks it might pull the trigger.

“Based on the scouts and sources that I have talked to, they seem to be content with Jared Goff just because Brad Holmes was with the Rams when they selected him with the No. 1 overall pick,” Reid said. “But I wouldn’t rule out them taking a quarterback on Day 2 or Day 3. One option I would like to bring up here is Houston quarterback Clayton Tune—a player who’s seen as a very intriguing late-round pick. … He operates well in rhythm, he has enough arm strength and mobility as a developmental option. I think they could find a lot of intrigue with him.”

Though Goff resurrected his career in 2022, throwing for 4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions, he’ll be 29 a month into the 2023 season and there’s questions about whether he’s the long-term answer under center.

Most draft experts project Tune to be taken anywhere from the fourth to seventh round, but he could be the ideal choice to sit a year or two behind Goff and allow the Lions coaching staff to develop him.

The 24-year-old Tune had a breakout year in 2022, passing for 4,074 yards, 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading Houston with 546 yards rushing. It was the second straight year Tune had 3,500 or more passing yards and 30 or more touchdowns with 10 or fewer interceptions.
