Another Watt brother announces his retirement

And then there was one. 

The Watt brothers have been one of the most iconic sets of siblings to play in the NFL, but another is joining his brother, former defensive end J.J. Watt, in retirement.

Ace special teamer and fullback Derek Watt took to social media on Tuesday to announce that he is officially hanging up his cleats.

"What a ride it has been! Just a kid from Pewaukee, MI who had the chance to live out his childhood dream of being drafted and playing in the NFL," Watt said in a statement. "It is with great honor and gratitude that I officially announce my retirement and the end to my career."

Watt, a sixth-round pick by the Chargers in the 2016 NFL Draft, ends a productive seven seasons in the league that included stops in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh.

His stats don't jump off the screen, posting just 71 yards, three touchdowns (two on the ground and one through the air) and 178 yards. However, he was among the more productive special teamers during his NFL career with 62 tackles.

Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is now the last remaining Watt brother in the league. There are no signs of him slowing down, though, as he was recently named a finalist for the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in sacks (19).

Although all three brothers were never able to play together on the same team, Derek and T.J. did play three seasons together (2020-22) in Pittsburgh.

Derek still credits both, however, for the success he had in his career.

"To J.J. and T.J. ... From playing in the backyard, to sharing a field in the NFL, this journey together has been absolutely incredible," Watt added. "They say if you want to be great, then you should surround yourself with greatness ... You both have pushed me to be the best that I could be."
