Jared Goff had a rough first year with the Lions. Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl behind Matthew Stafford last Sunday. The man for whom he was traded faces a much more uncertain future, but one of his former coaches is still a believer.

Jared Goff was underwhelming in his first season with the Detroit Lions, showing little to demonstrate that he can be the long-term answer at quarterback. Former offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, however, still thinks the Lions can win with Goff.

“I think you look at Jared Goff’s track record, you know, when he was with Los Angeles [Rams],” Lynn told Woodward Sports’ “The Bottom Line” in a recent appearance. “He was the quarterback of that team, and they went to the Super Bowl. They can absolutely win with Jared Goff.”

Goff did quarterback the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance. However, it speaks to Sean McVay’s lack of faith in the quarterback that he aggressively sought to swap Goff for Stafford. This year’s title backs up that decision.

On one hand, Goff had very little talent at his disposal in Detroit this season. Nevertheless, he definitely appeared to regress further as time went on, and the Lions are probably thinking about a long-term replacement.
