The banged-up New York Jets elevate wide receiver Lawrence Cager and offensive lineman Jimmy Murray for Week 3’s matchup.

Finally, it’s Cager time.

After a nice training camp effort in August, undrafted rookie wide receiver Lawrence Cager will get his first crack at professional football this Sunday in Indianapolis when the New York Jets take on the Colts.

The organization elevated Cager and offensive lineman Jimmy Murray from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.

Cager, 23, signed with the Jets following the virtual 2020 NFL Draft this past offseason. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 200 pounds, the Miami (FL) and Georgia product played well with quarterback Mike White in his first NFL camp.

Cager caught several touchdowns in high-point style . The quarterback would simply throw it up for the big man to snag it at its highest point in the corner of the end zone. With Denzel Mims still on the IR and Breshad Perriman out, providing Sam Darnold at least one big sideline threat on the outside is critical.

Interestingly, New York will dress just four wide receivers Sunday (Cager, Braxton Berrios, Chris Hogan and Josh Malone), the same number of quarterbacks that will be dressed for the contest. Worse yet, Berrios is listed questionable with a hamstring injury.

Along with Cager, offensive lineman Jimmy Murray is the second of two practice squad players to get the call this week in this most unusual season.

Murray, 25, played his college ball at Holy Cross and will serve as a backup interior offensive lineman. Connor McGovern‘s hamstring injury currently has him listed questionable. If the first-year Jet misses the game, veteran lineman Josh Andrews should get the call at center. Right tackle George Fant has already been ruled out.

The Jets are slated to kick-off against the Colts at 4:05 p.m. ET Sunday from Lucas Oil Stadium.
