The Bears signed veteran free agent backup defensive end Rasheem Green to a one-year contract.

A Seattle Seahawks edge player for his first four seasons in the league, Green played last year for the Houston Texans. He has 17 sacks in five seasons and 17 tackles for loss.

Green, who had 42 tackles last year, has started 29 career games and played in 69. The only year he was a regular starter was in 2021 when his 6 1/2 sacks tied for second with Seattle.

A third-round pick and No. 79 overall for the Seahawks in 2018, he has made 136 career tackles, three forced fumbles and two recoveries. He left the Seahawks in free agency after 2021 and signed with the Texans on a contract of one year and $3.25 million. Last year he had 3 1/2 sacks and eight QB hits.

The Bears situation at defensive end still looks to be a weakness. They have Green, Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson and DeMarcus Walker. They also have Jalyn Holmes and Gerri Green, who were signed as street free agents last year and brought back. However, Walker is a player who could slide inside to three-technique tackle at times, possibly in pass rush situations. His most effective pass rush downs last year with Tennessee came from the defensive tackle position and not end.

What this signing does is give the Bears a little more veteran support on the line. It could also make it somewhat more likely they'd look to offensive tackle first at No. 9 in the draft instead of edge rusher.
