There are a ton of possibilities for the Chicago Bears in the draft, with two picks in the top 10. The Bears are in a unique position because they are at a point where they can either trade up in the first round or trade down, and both scenarios would be a win for them. The Bears have a couple of significant needs: defensive line, quarterback, and wide receiver.

With two picks in the top 10, the Bears have the leverage to either attack and address their needs immediately or trade down to acquire more draft capital to use later on. In Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft, they have the Bears trading down with the Indianapolis Colts and selecting Jer’Zhan Newton with the 15th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. It’s a move that might surprise many Bears fans.

Chicago Bears Select Jer’Zhan Newton In Latest Mock Draft

Jer’Zhan Newton The Player

Height: 6’2

Weight: 300 (Unofficial)

Position: Defensive Tackle (DT)

Illinois DT Jer’Zhan Newton is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft. Newton has been a dominant force at Illinois and, at one point, was getting mocked in the top 5 in various mock drafts. He can essentially do it all. Newton is fast, plays with exceptional leverage, and shows adaptability playing anywhere on the defensive line. With agile movements and remarkable upper-body strength, Newton can quickly shed blocks, making his presence felt on the field.

Like any prospect, Newton has his flaws. Notably, he lacks the size typically associated with his position and struggles to handle double teams. Nevertheless, throughout his college career, Newton has consistently ranked among the top defensive tackles in college football. Despite his challenges with double-teams, he compensates by excelling in pressuring the quarterback. Given the precedent set by Aaron Donald, where size isn’t always a decisive factor for defensive tackles, Newton can potentially become the next great defensive lineman in the NFL.

Does Jer’Zhan Newton Fit With The Bears Defense?

The Bears have notable needs at pass-rusher and quarterback. While Caleb Williams will likely be their first pick for QB, the Bears could enhance their defense by adding a pass rusher to complement Montez Sweat on the opposite side. Although Jer’Zhan Newton isn’t primarily a pass rusher, it makes a lot of sense to draft Newton at 15. His versatility and ability to become the Bears’ top defensive tackle make him a compelling choice. In addition, Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus values the defensive tackle position. He emphasizes its importance, noting that solid interior pressure relieves stress on linebackers and cornerbacks.

From a trade standpoint, PFF has the Colts receiving picks 9 and 75, with the Bears receiving picks 15, 42, and 82. With only four picks in the draft, the Bears would greatly benefit from additional picks. With those two picks, the Bears can draft from a class filled with talent, especially in key positions where the Bears aim to improve their roster. Adding Newton to the mix makes it much easier for the Bears to navigate during the later rounds.
