Bears' Matt Eberflus makes big claim about Justin Fields, Tyson Bagent

It seems Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent received some coaching help from none other than injured starter Justin Fields before and as the undrafted rookie guided the Bears to an impressive 30-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

"He was great during the week working with Tyson, helping him understand the concepts and talking to him during practice," Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said about Fields during a conversation with NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "Before the game, he’s working through the first 15, [Saturday] night and [Sunday], making sure he was squared away with those things. In between series, he was right there with him, trying to help and talk to him about what’s going on with the defense, where they are. He did a really good job. That just shows you the kind of person he is."

Fields is dealing with a dislocated right thumb and watched as Bagent completed 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL start. Bagent is on track to remain atop the depth chart for the 2-5 Bears through the final weekend of October. It was learned on Monday that Fields is doubtful for the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" matchup at the 2-4 Los Angeles Chargers.

Fans shouldn't get used to Bagent serving as Chicago's QB1 this fall. Eberflus publicly insisted after Sunday's victory that a healthy Fields "is our starting quarterback," and the coach echoed those words while speaking with Breer.

"Justin’s our starter," Eberflus told Breer. "Bagent came in and did a nice job, certainly with this win. It’s a credit to him, and it’s a credit to the entire offensive staff."

As of Tuesday evening, OddsChecker listed the Bears as eight-and-a-half-point underdogs against the Chargers. Bagent is no stranger to proving doubters wrong, and he'll receive an opportunity to become a household name in front of a prime-time television audience.
