Bears QB Justin Fields after shaky performance against Texans: 'I played like trash'

On Sunday, the Chicago Bears improved to 2-1 on the young NFL season, even if it was by the skin of their teeth.

The Bears escaped with a 23-20 win over the Houston Texans at Soldier Field, despite another lackluster effort from second-year quarterback Justin Fields.

Fields struggled again on Sunday, only adding to concerns about the Bears' future at quarterback.

After posting only 70 passing yards in a 27-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, Fields didn't respond how Bears fans may have hoped against the Texans. Fields finished the day 8-of-17 for 106 yards and two interceptions, adding 47 rushing yards off eight attempts.

Following Sunday's win, Fields was his harshest critic. Speaking with the media, Fields harshly criticized his game and vowed to improve.

"Straight up, I just played like - I don't want to say the 'A' word, but I'm not going to do that," Fields said. "But I just played like trash. I played terrible. And really, I just got to get better."

Since the Bears made Fields the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, the hope was that he'd eventually grow into the face of the franchise.

While it's still early, Fields' NFL resume so far isn't very promising.

Fields has passed for only 297 yards through three weeks of the season with an abysmal 51.1 percent completion percentage and a 2 to 4 touchdown to interception ratio.

Some may argue that Fields' supporting cast isn't the best, which has limited his opportunities to throw the ball this season. Earlier this week, Fields responded, "Yeah, maybe," when asked if the Bears' heavy-running scheme has possibly curbed his development as a quarterback.
