Rookies Gervon Dexter Jr. and Tyrique Stevenson made an impression on Bears coaches throughout the offseason work as unsigned second-round draft picks.
They are unsigned no longer. The Bears on Thursday announced both had agreed to terms. They had been the only unsigned Bears draft picks.
No terms have been reported but Spotrac.com projected those salary slots at a $1.89 million bonus for Dexter and $1.69 million for Stevenson plus their minimum rookie salaries. Dexter's cap cost comes in at a projected $1.22 million for this year and Stevenson at $1.17 million. When the day started, there were still 18 unsigned second-round picks besides Dexter and Stevenson, according to Spotrac.com.
Dexter was the 53rd pick overall and Stevenson 56th. Dexter, a defensive tackle from Florida, has been lining up with the second unit and rotating into the defensive front at OTAs and minicamp behind Justin Jones and Andrew Billings.
"What I like most about him is his hustle," coach Matt Eberflus said. "Man, he hustles. He's got his track shoes on and he is running out there, which is great to see from a guy who's 308, something like that, 6-foot-5. So, it's good to see."
Stevenson, a cornerback who played at Georgia and finished at Miami in college, has had the majority of Bears first-team plays at right cornerback in the offseason.
"We love where he is in terms of his length, his competitiveness and we know he tackles," Eberflus said. "We know he likes to hit. That's why he's here. Corners need to tackle. They need to really be a physical force out there and he's gonna do that. And we're excited about that, getting the pads on.
"So I think he'll take even a step up more when we get the pads on."
