Bears sign QB Nathan Peterman to one-year contract

The Chicago Bears have spent a portion of their offseason reorganizing their quarterback room as they look to surround 2021 rookie Justin Fields with multiple veterans who seemingly won't serve as anything resembling competition. 

Chicago allowed former Cincinnati Bengals starter Andy Dalton to leave via free agency and signed Trevor Siemian to a reported two-year deal before the club released Super Bowl LII Most Valuable Player Nick Foles. 

On Wednesday, the Bears added signal-caller Nathan Peterman to the roster on a one-year contract. Specifics about the deal weren't announced.

Peterman first entered the NFL when the Buffalo Bills selected him in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, but he played in just eight games in less than two full seasons before he was released in November 2018. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders later that same year and remained attached to the club through the end of this past campaign.

Peterman didn’t attempt a single pass in his only appearance of the 2021 season.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said before this year's draft his offense is "going to be very quarterback-friendly" for Fields, and general manager Ryan Poles remarked last week that the Bears are "all-in on" the 23-year-old. Ideally, Fields will learn as much as possible from Siemian and Peterman before the games begin to matter in September.
