Bengals HC Zac Taylor: Joe Burrow still 'day-to-day' after July appendectomy

The Cincinnati Bengals have not had star quarterback Joe Burrow as a full participant in training camp practices because he required surgery late last month to have his appendix removed.

Burrow returned to the team's facility at the start of the week, but head coach Zac Taylor wouldn't say at that time when the 25-year-old could resume practicing or if he'd be available for the club's preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals at Paul Brown Stadium next Friday. It now sounds like Burrow will be a spectator for at least that contest.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk and Ben Baby of ESPN, Taylor told reporters on Friday that Burrow remains "day-to-day."

"I hate to put a timeline on it," Taylor said of Burrow's status. "But he's getting a lot of good mental work right now."

Burrow has been spotted driving a medical cart on the field during practices and apparently has remained quite busy behind the scenes. At the moment, Taylor isn't considering having the third-year pro call plays during sessions.

"I don’t think that’s necessary for him," Taylor explained. "I think he’s been pretty locked in and focused. He’s in the meetings and helping lead some of the meetings — like he was today. So he’s been plenty engaged and I don’t think we need that to stimulate him. He does a pretty good job with that."

Following next Friday's contest, the Bengals will travel to face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 21.
