Bengals place RB Joe Mixon on IR with foot injury

The Cincinnati Bengals will be without their top running back for at least the next three games.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bengals have placed Joe Mixon on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Mixon last played during Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts. He had 18 carries for 54 yards and one touchdown during that game.

The 24-year-old has 119 carries for 428 yards and three touchdowns in six games this season. He was coming off back-to-back seasons of 1,400-plus total yards from scrimmage, and he very well could've accomplished the feat for a third season if not for his nagging foot injury.

The Bengals initially opted not to place Mixon on injured reserve, which makes it seem like they weren't expecting his recovery to take this long.

Giovani Bernard and Samaje Perine have handled duties in the backfield in Mixon's absence.
