Bengals TE Drew Sample trying to get family out of Ukraine
Cincinnati Bengals tight end Drew Sample is looking to extract multiple family members from Ukraine amid the ongoing military invasion from Russia, multiple sources reported Monday morning.
According to ESPN, Sample's wife, Angelina, has an aunt and both sets of grandparents stuck in the war-torn European country. The couple went on Fox News on Monday morning and said Ukraine-born Angelina has been in contact with her family members stuck during the invasion but that they are "sitting in the dark in the basement" amid the military attacks.
"For us, we've just been trying to see if there's anything we can do to set up a plan where we can get them to us so they feel comfortable leaving, because it's obviously dangerous for them," Drew Sample said, via ESPN.
He added, via USA Today: "We understand there's a lot of people who are in our similar situation... We've been trying to bring awareness to the fact of just how hard it has been on those people. For us, it's just been hard because there's really no good answers. The Ukrainians are proud people and without any concrete plan of what's going to happen once they leave the country, they really don't want to leave. We're really their only family that's in the United States."
Sample, 25, just wrapped up his third season with the Bengals, registering 11 receptions for 83 yards in 2021.
