Best and worst NFL betting teams through 7 weeks: Watch these trends, they'll help you win

Before we head to Week 8 in the NFL, let's sift through the betting trends and the teams to keep an eye on for this coming weekend.

Week 8 offers us the largest collection of games of interest yet since we began this weekly series, with five notable games off this year's spread and total points trends.

Best teams: ATS

Our darling Falcons finally dropped a game against the spread, and now must share the mantle with one of this year's most surprising teams.

  1. New York Giants (6-1)
  2. Atlanta Falcons (6-1)
  3. Buffalo Bills (4-1-1)
  4. Dallas Cowboys (5-2)
  5. New York Jets (5-2)
  6. Cincinnati Bengals (5-2)

Daniel Jones and the Giants are 6-1 in the standings and against the spread, winning in a tight one over Jacksonville on the road. At some point we probably need to acknowledge that the Giants are just a good team. They are tied with the Eagles for the most wins in the NFL.

It looks like the Bengals may finally be figuring things out after a slow start, winners of two straight and now 5-2 ATS.

Worst teams: ATS

It's very surprising to see teams quarterbacked by Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers to be on this list, but the Bucs and Packers have been two of the most disappointing teams this season.

  1. Carolina Panthers (2-5)
  2. Denver Broncos (2-5)
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5)
  4. New Orleans Saints (2-5)
  5. Green Bay Packers (2-5)
  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-5)

The worst loss of the Buccaneers' and Tom Brady's run occurred on Sunday, when they lost 21-3 to the lowly Panthers. This Tampa team does not look good, but because of such a horrid NFC South, they would be the No. 4 seed if the season ended today.

The Broncos' season is all but toast, and things aren't looking good for New Orleans either. Both teams are 2-5 overall and against the spread.

Best teams: Overs

Not many teams are covering their overs at a profitable clip, confirmation again that you need to consider taking unders when you look at the NFL board.

  1. Las Vegas Raiders (4-1-1)
  2. Cleveland Browns (5-2)
  3. New Orleans Saints (5-2)
  4. Detroit Lions (4-2)

The Lions started 4-0 against the over but have scored just six total points as an offense over the last two weeks. Until they figure that out, best to consider them a stretch to hit their total points.

Best teams: Unders

As mentioned above, unders have reigned supreme this NFL season and deserve your attention.

  1. Indianapolis Colts (6-1)
  2. Denver Broncos (6-1)
  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-1)
  4. Los Angeles Rams (5-1)
  5. Buffalo Bills (5-1)

In the spirit of brevity on the numbered list, we'll mention that eight more teams are all 5-2 against the under: Carolina, the Giants, Pittsburgh, Miami, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Dallas and Baltimore.

The Colts and Broncos have a perfect recipe for unders: struggling quarterbacks and a strong defense. Both teams made big trades for QBs this offseason, and it clearly has not paid off.

Buffalo's over-inflated lines have helped cause them to sit here 5-1 to the under. They have an explosive offense averaging the second-most points per game, but coupled with both an elite defense and a market betting their overs up and up, the under has been the play when the Bills hit the field.

Week 8 Games of Interest

Baltimore Ravens @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (45 points) — Tampa Bay is 6-1 to the under while Baltimore is 5-2. This past week saw both Thursday and Monday night games go over for what felt like the first time in forever. Are we due for more primetime scoring or a regression back to the trends that began the year? These two teams suggest the latter.

Las Vegas Raiders @ New Orleans Saints (48.5 points) — Two of the best teams to the over will meet on the turf in New Orleans on Sunday. The third-highest total of the weekend, this looks like a good spot to consider betting the points.

Carolina Panthers @ Atlanta Falcons (-4.5) — Can the Falcons get back on track as an elite ATS team? They're still 6-1 ATS while Carolina is 2-5. The Panthers remain a struggling bunch, and off an upset victory and now on the road, they may lose a bit of their luster in Week 8.

San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams (42 points) — The Rams are 6-1 to unders and the Niners not far behind at 5-2. These two teams already met once this season, a game that saw the total reach just 33.

Green Bay Packers @ Buffalo Bills (-10.5) — This is the largest spread Aaron Rodgers has ever faced as an underdog, and it's well-deserved seeing the Packers lose three straight games to teams they really should have been able to handle. Buffalo is off their bye, at home, and 4-1-1 ATS.
