Bill Belichick stunned a lot of people by agreeing to be in a Subway ad campaign that launched Tuesday with the release of a commercial starring the New England Patriots head coach.
The decision by Belichick to sign on for such an endeavor obviously plays against the curmudgeonly coach’s football-only, no-nonsense and gruff persona, to put it mildly. In a press release from Subway, Belichick is quoted explaining why he elected to play against type.
“When Subway reached out, shared the Footlong Season campaign objectives and the ideas for the commercial, I decided the timing was right to have some fun and enjoy some sandwiches,” Belichick said in a Subway press release released Tuesday.
As Belichick mentions, his commercial is part of Subway’s “Footlong Season” campaign, which is part of the iconic sandwich shop’s new role as the official sandwich sponsor of the NFL. The campaign will also feature NFL star brothers J.J., T.J and Derek Watt, along with Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.
It turns out that Belichick’s decision to get involved in an ad campaign stems in large part from how the partnership benefited his foundation, per a statement shared on the homepage of the Bill Belichick Foundation’s official site.
Irrespective of Belichick’s motivation for starring in a Subway spot, the results certainly speak for themselves, as the Patriots head coach’s tight-lipped star turn will surely delight NFL fans.
The fact that Belichick cuts off the sleeves on the man’s suit is a great nod to his notoriously iconic hobo chic sense of style.
Even better, images that recently surfaced on social media hint that the above spot might not be the only one Belichick filmed. In them, Belichick is shown eating a sub while seated on a bench, which is not featured in the first commercial shared by Subway.
“I haven’t ever done anything like that,” Belichick said of the shoot earlier this summer. “It was a fun commercial to do. And everybody loves sandwiches, so hopefully, they will be OK with it. I know I’m going to get killed in the rookie shows on this. I know that’s going to happen, but I’ll just have to swallow it.”
