There were literally a dozen prospects other than Michael Penix that I thought the Falcons would draft last night. To say it was a stunner would be an understatement.

Removing Penix as a prospect from the equation, Atlanta’s process is at best flawed with no real plan. At worst… I don’t even want to go there. Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris aren’t going to get another crack as a GM and head coach, respectively, if this goes south.

They know that. They have conviction in who Penix is, but it’s still a head scratching move for a club that has seemingly made it up as they go along. This offseason was supposed to be different.

The Falcons began with signing Kirk Cousins and Darnell Mooney, filling the team’s two biggest roster holes. Many believed with Morris now in the building, we were heading in the right direction.

However, over the course of the next couple of months, the Falcons didn’t address the defense other than a couple of depth signings. No matter, the draft presented an opportunity to get a premier defender in the first round, whether that be along the front or on the backend.

Nope. A quarterback.

At a certain point, we have to just call a spade a spade. There’s no rhyme or reason to what the Falcons do. It may work, but it isn’t because there’s some well-thought-out plan behind it.

If you need someone to talk you off the ledge, it’s Bill Belichick. After the pick, the greatest coach of all time, who was passed over in Atlanta, said that he likes Penix, even though he thought the 8th pick was high, finishing with, “Having two good quarterbacks is never a bad thing.”
