Bills GM provides update on Damar Hamlin

Bills general manager Brandon Beane gave a positive update on Damar Hamlin on Tuesday, but cautioned the safety has a long road to go before he's healthy enough to play again.

Hamlin sat courtside for Philadelphia's 101-99 loss to Miami as he continues to make the rounds after his horrifying on-field health scare and subsequent remarkable recovery.

Bean noted Hamlin's unofficial title as "America's guest" since he left the hospital. On Jan. 2, Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest following a play in a Monday night game between Buffalo and Cincinnati. First responders on site administered life-saving CPR on Hamlin, and the game was ultimately canceled.

By the end of the week, his vitals returned to normal and he was transferred to a Buffalo-area hospital the following week.

He first appeared in a press box for Buffalo's divisional-round game against Cincinnati and then at the Super Bowl alongside a cavalry of first responders who were instrumental in his recovery.

Best of all, in the immediate aftermath of his cardiac episode, his online toy drive raised over $8 million. It grew so big that Hamlin partnered with The Giving Back Fund to help facilitate the disbursement of donations after the fundraiser initially began with a goal of $2,500 on GoFundMe.

That would be a great end to this chapter of Hamlin's story, but as Beane noted, there are still a few more pages to be written.

"It's a decision for Damar but also for us," Beane said, acknowledging medical professionals and Hamlin need to consult on whether it's in his best interest to return to football.

As we learned in the immediate aftermath of his on-field collapse, his reach extends far beyond the gridiron. A return to action would be great, but no matter what, Hamlin's story is far from over.
