Josh Allen has a new target. In another free agency move, the Buffalo Bills have signed former Miami Dolphins WR Trent Sherfield to a one-year contract. Sherfield earned much acclaim, and the immediate reaction from Dolphins fans is frustration at the loss of a fan-favourite.

The Upside To Trent Sherfield

Trent Sherfield brings a lot to the table. Coming off career highs of 417 receiving yards on 30 catches (13.9 YPR ), with 2 TDs, he’s a valuable depth contributor who sees plenty of special teams action. With Jake Kumerow currently off the roster, the Bills needed a replacement, and they may have found him.

But check this out… Sherfield is a threat without the ball too. Last season, he was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded blocking receiver.

That holds great weight in a wide receiver room that that needed different skillsets. He joins a group alongside the speedy Deonte Harty, and is no slouch himself in that department. His speed surprises, since it’s not his calling card, but he can compete with some of the best depth options in the league. Here he is against the San Francisco 49ers last season, taking a short pass to the house.

Though not a deep threat, Sherfield is a consistent receiver who can make the catch through contact and excels in short-yardage situations. Though only a one-year deal, Sherfield gives the Buffalo Bills security over the middle and solid hands, both of which they lost with the expiration of Cole Beasley’s contract.

If nothing else, he’s a great culture fit, and a valued contributor on special teams. That’s worth investing in.

He’s also the guy who took the punt to his backside for Miami last season, in case you forgot.
