Black Friday NFL game to air free on Amazon Prime in 2023

Amazon Prime Video is getting into the holiday spirit a bit early this year.

Per Joe Reedy of the Associated Press, Amazon announced on Tuesday that the Black Friday NFL game scheduled for Nov. 24 will stream on Prime Video for free.

The NFL moved "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts to Amazon Prime Video this past season per the terms of an 11-year agreement reportedly worth an average of $1.2 billion per year. Those games streamed to Amazon Prime Video subscribers but were televised free in the local markets of the competing teams.

"We’re excited to expand our relationship with the NFL and build a new holiday tradition for our customers with the first Black Friday NFL game," Prime Video vice president Jay Marine said for a released statement. "We’re so very proud of our 'Thursday Night Football' production and all the teams in front of and behind the camera. As families look to spend time together over the holiday weekend, we are excited to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy this new day of NFL action."

It was reported last spring that Amazon wanted at least one game for the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is arguably the most famous shopping day of the calendar year and also a day that many would-be viewers have off of work and school. In May, Peter King of NBC Sports noted that the NFL was passing on a Black Friday game for 2022, largely because the United States Men's National Team and England were scheduled to play a FIFA World Cup match that same afternoon.

According to Doug Greenberg of Front Office Sports, the Fox broadcast of the USA-England contest attracted 15.4 million viewers and became the most-watched men’s soccer match in the history of American English-language television.

The NFL's Black Friday game is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. ET. Teams will be announced later this spring.
