Boomer Esiason suggests how Giants should handle Xavier McKinney injury situation

On Monday, New York Giants fans learned that Xavier McKinney would be sidelined " a few weeks ," following an ATV accident that occurred while vacationing in Cabo. On Tuesday, Boomer Esiason made a suggestion to "Big Blue" for how to handle the situation.

"It’s his fault. It’s his responsibility,” Esiason said, per WFAN. “Whatever happened to personal responsibility anymore? ... That’s why the only way to get anything across to anybody is to take their salary away and suspend them and say ‘This is not going to happen. It’s unacceptable. This is not going to happen. You can’t do this.’"

In addition to being a captain for New York, McKinney ranks third on the team in passes defended (four) and fourth in tackles (38). The safety had started each of the Giants' first eight games leading up to their Week 9 bye.

After being limited to six contests (four starts) as a rookie due to a foot injury, McKinney played in all 17 games during the 2021 campaign, making 16 starts. The 2020 second-round pick paced New York in interceptions last season with five, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Esiason compared the Giants' situation to one going one with the Brooklyn Nets, who recently suspended star point guard Kyrie Irving in the wake of his antisemitism controversy.

"It’s like what the Nets are going through with Kyrie Irving," Esiason said. "It’s self-sabotage ... the only way we can impress upon you just how bad this is by taking away your salary and not allowing you to play the game you love so much, because we can’t do it any other way, because you can’t be trusted."
