Brandin Cooks: Contract extension with Texans a 'blessing'

The Houston Texans won only four games last season and then traded controversial star quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns, but neither of those things caused wide receiver Brandin Cooks to search for a fresh start elsewhere.

Cooks previously played for the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, and Los Angeles Rams before he landed in Houston in 2020, and he was the subject of multiple trade rumors earlier this spring until he signed a two-year extension that could keep him linked with the Texans through the 2024 season and that reportedly includes $36 million in guaranteed money.

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Cooks spoke with reporters Tuesday about staying put, potentially for the foreseeable future.

"It was huge, not just for my family and I, but believing in what this organization is trying to get done and what Nick (Caserio) and Coach Lovie (Smith) are building," Cooks explained. "It’s definitely a blessing. I’m glad we can put that behind us and get back to work."

According to ESPN stats, Cooks led the Texans last season with 90 receptions, 134 targets, 1,037 receiving yards, and six touchdown catches. As things stand today, Cooks and other Houston weapons will be tasked with helping quarterback and 2021 rookie Davis Mills make significant strides later this year.
