The New England Patriots have signed veteran defensive tackle and former Pittsburgh Steeler Armon Watts, according to multiple league sources.

Watts, 27, as developed into a steady interior pass-rush presence through the first five seasons of his career, logging 8.5 sacks while producing 140 tackles over that span.

Adding Watts gives the New England Patriots a solid veteran presence along the defensive line capable of consistently contributing quality snaps. Pro Football Focus points out that Watts added 16 quarterback pressures last season, which will give him the chance to see meaningful playing time along a rebuilt front seven for the Patriots.

Armon Watts Arrives with New England Patriots after Strong 2023 Season

Last season was arguably the strongest of Watts’ career.

Even before the 2023 campaign began, Watts drew the respect of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

“He’s an NFL player,” Tomlin told reporters in August, 2023. “You can tell he’s been in an NFL environment. He’s available consistently every day. He’ll be given an opportunity to state a case for himself for sure.”

Pro Football Focus listed Watts as the Steelers’ most improved player, as his overall grade was a strong 76.2 by season’s end.

“Defensive lineman Armon Watts joined the Steelers after playing in Chicago in 2022,” PFF wrote. “And he earned a career-high run-defense grade. Watts could very well earn more playing time in 2024.”

Watts was originally chosen by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth-round of the 2019 NFL Draft, out of Arkansas.

Now, when the 2024 season kicks off in September, Watts has the chance to build on his strong 2023 campaign play a vital role in new head coach Jerod Mayo’s defense.
