The Denver Broncos have been more active in free agency than in some time, having made multiple moves early in the 'legal tampering' period.

I will examine each player's contract breakdown as the details are revealed. Let's look at the deal the Broncos gave to linebacker Alex Singleton.

Contract Details

Summary: Three years, $18M, $9M fully guaranteed.

Breakdown

  • 2023: $4M signing bonus, $2M base salary (fully guaranteed).
  • 2024: $5.49M base salary ($3M fully guaranteed), $510K per-game roster bonus.
  • 2025: $5.49M base salary, $510K per-game roster bonus.

Cap charges: $3.3M in 2023, $7.3M in 2024 and 2025.

Gut Reaction

This is the perfect example of a player signing a one-year deal for the veteran minimum, having a quality season, and the general manager saying, "here is your reward."

But even as Singleton received a significant raise, the Broncos didn't pay him that much more than Josey Jewell in terms of APY salary. They did give him more in full guarantees but kept it a reasonable sum.

Furthermore, the Broncos didn't have to jump into the upper tiers among off-ball linebackers. Singleton's deal is far less than what other players at the position make. While it was not a bargain deal like his one-year deal last year, it's still reasonable for a player of his talent level.

The Broncos could move on in 2024 if they wanted, though they would have to pay $3M in doing so (though there would be offset clauses). But it does look like the expectation is that Singleton will be with the team for at least the next two seasons.

Some may wonder about Singleton's fit in Vance Joseph's scheme, but Todd Davis played well under Joseph, and Singleton is similar to Davis in terms of talent. I have no issues with this contract for Singleton.
