Broncos' epic coaching carousel plan: Risk it on Sean Payton
Whether it's giving Sean Payton control of football operations or the largest contract for a head coach in NFL history, the Broncos need an epic plan to land the most coveted choice in the coaching carousel.
"Yes, many around the league expect Denver to at least check in on Payton and make a major run at him," wrote ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
However, Denver might need a grander scheme since he has options, including a New Orleans reunion.
According to NBC Sports' Mike Florio, the Saints' desire to bring back Payton "is the worst-kept secret in the league."
Payton was the Saints head coach from 2006 to 2021, where he won 63 percent of his games and a Super Bowl title (XLIV). New Orleans holds his rights through 2024.
So, the Broncos would have to compensate New Orleans somehow, which could include "a (draft) pick or two," per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Denver might not like hearing this after it traded two first-round picks (2022 and 2023) for Russell Wilson, but it's worth the risk since he's one of few candidates with a proven quarterback track record.
Potential Hall of Famer Drew Brees never threw for 30 touchdowns or more before he arrived in New Orleans. Perhaps Payton can have the same effect on Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler.
Payton is more prepared than other candidates, too. Schefter reports he's assembling an experienced staff that includes former Denver HC Vic Fangio.
Also, he turned a franchise that only had one playoff win in 49 seasons into a perennial contender. Broncos owner Greg Penner should bet on him since Denver hasn't made the playoffs in seven years.
