Broncos' latest moves show lack of confidence in receiving corps

The Broncos are showing they lack faith in their receiving corps.

Aside from reportedly taking calls on Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton, 'The Score''s Jordan Schultz relayed earlier this week that Denver made a "very aggressive" pursuit of former Packers WR Allen Lazard before he agreed to sign with the Jets.

These moves indicate that new head coach Sean Payton is still not sold on the organization's receiving corp.

Jeudy and Sutton were expected to break out last season after Denver traded for Seattle signal-caller Russell Wilson. That didn't happen. Instead, the Broncos went 5-12 while ranking last in scoring offense.

Although a healthy portion of the blame falls on Wilson, who posted a career-low 36.7 QBR (27th among starting QBs), Denver's in a spot where they have to hope last season's huge acquisition -- Wilson still has six years remaining on his contract -- can rebound. That marriage might have to last a while. The earliest Denver could release Wilson without incurring a significant cap hit is 2025.

If Denver trades Sutton, it can save $6.8M-$14.4M in an attempt to fix what is one of the league's worst cap situation, depending on if it's before or after the Jun. 1 deadline.

Their draft situation, like their cap situation, leaves much to be desired. Because the Broncos don't have a pick until the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the team could also try to move either Sutton or Jeudy for draft equity, with 'The Athletic''s Jeff Howe reporting that the organization has been seeking a first-round pick for Jeudy as the weather has warmed.
