Broncos' newest surprise HC candidate widens their coaching search

According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the Broncos are interviewing former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. Denver's interest in Caldwell is a surprise since he hasn't been an HC since 2017. However, interviewing Caldwell gives Denver more options, a savvy choice.

Possible interest in Caldwell differs from Denver's previous candidates. The Broncos have interviewed coaching stars who are still involved in the game, such as Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh and former Saints HC--now current FOX Sports studio analyst--Sean Payton.

Per NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, Payton and Harbaugh emerged as "top candidates." However, both are top candidates in this year's coaching carousel and may have multiple options.

Arizona's coaching vacancy might intrigue Payton, since Cardinals Quarterback Kyler Murray is 25 years old. Also, the general manager position is open after Steve Kiem stepped away to focus on his health. Kiem's resignation allows the Cardinals to hire someone like Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland, who worked with Payton in New Orleans from 2015-21.

"Multiple league sources, with no ties to the Colts, are convinced owner Jim Irsay will pursue Jim Harbaugh for the opening," wrote Zak Keefer of The Athletic. Harbaugh played in Indianapolis from 1994-97, so he has a prior relationship with Irsay.

Consequently, it's nice to have a backup plan, which might be why Denver's interviewing an experienced candidate like Caldwell. He went 62-50 as a head coach, led the Colts to Super Bowl XLIV and had two playoff appearances in Detroit alongside five winning seasons.

Caldwell, Payton and Harbaugh are not the only candidates that interest Denver. Per longtime Broncos reporter Mike Klis, the Broncos requested to interview Rams Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Each has head coaching experience.

Perhaps Denver is simply broadening its search because it doesn't want to bet its entire future on one type of candidate.
