Broncos OC Justin Outten wants to see how QB Drew Lock 'fits in this system'

Almost immediately after news broke that the Denver Broncos would be hiring former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as their next head coach, some linked the Broncos with current Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who still hasn't publicly announced his intentions for the 2022 NFL season. Such rumblings only grew louder once Hackett named ex-Packers assistant Justin Outten as his offensive coordinator.

If, however, the Broncos had to play a game today, 2019 second-round pick Drew Lock would probably begin that contest under center even though he hasn't yet shown he can be the franchise's long-term answer at the sport's most important position. Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Outten suggested Tuesday he wants to get a look at Lock in person before possibly making any call about who will be atop the depth chart later this year.

"He’s got a powerful arm, he’s done a really good job as far as using his legs as far as being an athlete . . . I want to see how he fits in this system a little more when he gets the playbook under him and we’ll go from there," Outten said of Lock.

Rodgers may or may not be sticking with Green Bay, depending on the latest story one reads on the subject, but the Broncos have been mentioned as a potential suitor for San Francisco 49ers veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who is looking for a new home as his employer (possibly?) prepares to make 2021 rookie Trey Lance its new QB1.
