Broncos release QB Jeff Driskel amid Aaron Rodgers rumors

The Denver Broncos were repeatedly linked with reigning Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers ahead of and during the NFL Draft that came and went this past weekend without the Green Bay Packers QB going anywhere other than to the Kentucky Derby.

Denver announced the signing of tight end Eric Saubert on Monday but somewhat interestingly included that it had also parted ways with backup quarterback Jeff Driskel.

Driskel appeared in three games for Denver last season and completed 35 of 64 passes for 432 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. In total, he was sacked 11 times during the year.

The Broncos traded with the Carolina Panthers for Teddy Bridgewater last week and also have Drew Lock and Brett Rypien in their QB room.

Monday's development, on its own, wouldn't register much of a blip on the radar, but it's worth noting that salary-cap setbacks could prevent the Packers from officially trading Rodgers until at least early June. Every day Rodgers and the Packers don't come to terms on an extension or amended agreement will likely lead to additional rumors that the 37-year-old is serious about not playing another home game at Lambeau Field, and the fact that the Broncos may now have space on their depth chart for a new starting QB is merely the latest twist in what's become the most interesting saga of the NFL offseason.
