Broncos release veteran DT Jurrell Casey after one season

The Denver Broncos added veteran defensive tackle Jurrell Casey via a trade with the Tennessee Titans last March that only cost Denver a seventh-round draft pick. That arrangement has ended after a handful of appearances.

Denver confirmed on Thursday that the club has released Casey. The 31-year-old played in three games but was lost for the season in late September because of a biceps injury.

According to an ESPN story, the move saves the Broncos $11.87 million in salary-cap space for the 2021 campaign. There was no guaranteed money remaining on Casey's contract.

Casey earned Pro Bowl nods every year from 2015 through 2019 and made a second-team All-Pro appearance when he tallied 10.5 sacks in 2013.

While with the Broncos, Casey helped launch the "We Stand For" campaign meant to "spotlight social justice causes, organizations and charities that hold significance to players, coaches and staff." He previously led a similar program with the Titans.

Casey ends his Broncos tenure with 14 tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits and three passes defended. As long as he can show he's healthy by training camp sessions, it's likely a team, potentially a contender, will look to sign him on a short-term "prove-it" deal.
