All signs point to Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams being ready to go for the start of the 2023 season. According to NFL Network’s James Palmer, Williams will not be on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list when the Broncos begin training camp Friday.

Williams started the Broncos’ first four games of 2022 before tearing his ACL, PCL and PLC in his right knee and missing the remainder of the year. Given the severity of his injury, many wondered whether Williams could be back in time for Week 1. However, Williams always had the goal of doing so.

“I mean, that’s the plan. I feel like I’m ready to go,” the running back told ESPN earlier this month. “It’s just all about the evaluation, how the Broncos feel about it. Just seeing how I feel, moving, just trying to get my speed back to normal. Things like that.”

Training camp won’t be the first practice reps for Williams since the injury. He also saw limited work during Denver’s OTAs in May. It remains to be seen whether he will be in a limited capacity for training camp, but one would think the team would be cautious as he continues to work his way back.

Javonte Williams put together a strong rookie season after the Broncos selected him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He finished the year with 903 yards and four touchdowns to rank third among first-year players behind only Najee Harris and Elijah Mitchell. He also made an impact in the passing game with 43 catches for 316 yards and three scores.

Prior to his injury this past season, Williams was on pace to at least match those numbers. Although he didn’t record a touchdown in four games, he 11 catches for 65 yards in the season opener against Seattle. Williams followed that up with 75 yards on 15 carries in Week 2 against the Texans.

In addition to Williams, the Broncos signed free agent running back Samaje Perine this offseason. They also have Tony Jones Jr. and Tyler Badie behind him. One would think Williams will resume his starting role, but Perine and the others could see some reps early on as he works his way back into a rhythm.

The Broncos finished this season with a 5-12 record and missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season. They are scheduled to open the 2023 regular season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 10.
