Broncos 'strongly encourage' fans to wear masks in all indoor areas of stadium

The 5-4 Denver Broncos host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday ahead of their bye but were worried about something more important than football on Friday.

"Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases locally, the Denver Broncos are strongly encouraging fans to follow the latest guidance from the City of Denver and State of Colorado by wearing masks throughout all indoor areas at Empower Field at Mile High beginning with Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles," the Broncos announced.

"Regardless of vaccination status, masks will be strongly encouraged for all indoor areas at Empower Field at Mile High. These include, but are not limited to, the Broncos Team Store, restrooms, elevators, all concourses, Guest Services locations and club and suite levels. The recommendation comes as a response to increased COVID-19 cases in the state and the rising capacity of COVID-19 patients within local healthcare systems."

The Broncos added they will shift policies down the road if deemed necessary by local health officials, the local government and/or the NFL. This indicates mask mandates could become part of Denver home games sooner than later.

Shortly after this announcement, the Broncos confirmed guard Austin Schlottmann was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Schlottmann joined quarterback Drew Lock, cornerback Michael Ojemudia and linebacker Justin Strnad on that list.

Later, it was also reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero that Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is in COVID protocols and not expected to coach in Sunday's game.

Meanwhile, the NHL's Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks have all recently endured coronavirus outbreaks even though it was said roughly one month ago that only four players throughout the NHL weren't vaccinated against COVID-19 as of that time, per Dan Rosen of the league's website.
