The Browns have beefed up their safety room with an 11-year veteran who has more Super Bowl experience than anyone on the roster.
Cleveland signed safety Duron Harmon to their practice squad Wednesday, a move that was likely made as a result of the Browns losing safety Rodney McLeod for the rest of the season due to a biceps injury suffered last Sunday against the Steelers.
Harmon has appeared in an impressive four Super Bowl across his career — all of which were with the Patriots — and has four career interceptions in the postseason. He’s the second player with Super Bowl experience the Browns have added to their practice squad this week following their signing of quarterback Joe Flacco, the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII.
Harmon was a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2013 and helped New England win Super Bowl XLIX in 2014, Super Bowl LI in 2016 and Super Bowl LIII in 2019. He also appeared in Super Bowl LII in 2018, when his new defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, defeated the Patriots when Schwartz was defensive coordinator with the Eagles.
Harmon has appeared in 164 career games and has logged 23 career interceptions. He’s been known throughout his career as a clutch playoff performer, which started when he snagged an interception off Flacco, coincidentally, in the final two minutes of New England’s 35-31 win over the Ravens in the 2014 Divisional Round.
Harmon also secured an interception in the Divisional Round of the 2016 playoffs, an interception in Super Bowl LII and an interception in the Patriots’ loss to the Titans in the Wild Card Round in 2020.
Harmon could be a candidate to be promoted to the active roster through the rest of the season if the Browns continue to deal with injuries in their safety room. McLeod was a key rotational player whom the Browns will have to replace, while starting safety Juan Thornhill also missed last week’s game against the Steelers due to a calf injury. Grant Delpit, Ronnie Hickman and D’Anthony Bell are also on the active roster, while Tanner McCallister is on the practice squad.
The Browns are the third team Harmon has spent time with this season, previously joining the Ravens practice squad at the beginning of the season and the Bears’ active roster until he was released on Nov. 8.
