Following the news out of Northwestern with head coach Pat Fitzgerald being fired following hazing allegations, Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II has a message for the college town of Evanston.

“Ok now this is getting out of hand. Coach Fitz is a great man,” Newsome said on Twitter earlier today. “During my time at NU I have never felt belittled or treated any different for being Black or a minority. Stop it.”

Newsome went on to say that he doesn’t want to negate how the accusers feel but he didn’t come across the same happenings.

"It’s also obvious that we played during different eras so that could’ve been an experience that they had and don’t want to downplay their experience. But from mine it was nothing but respect.”

Newsome is a former first-round pick out of Northwestern in the 2021 NFL Draft. Newsome spent three seasons in Evanston and played in just 17 games but showed plenty during that time to be selected early.

As a rookie, Newsome was stellar with nine passes defended and matched up well with some pretty good wideouts. During his second season, he played more in the slot but played in 15 games, three more than he did as a rookie. His play did take a step back, though he’s expected to be in a more comfortable playing spot in 2023.

It looks like Newsome is staying loyal to his former coach during these allegations, despite them being quite serious. Northwestern wasted no time making the firing happen.
