Browns get huge defensive boost with return of star CB ahead of Week 1 vs. Bengals

After some uncertainty in recent days, it was reported Friday that star cornerback Denzel Ward will play for the Cleveland Browns in their season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The two-time Pro Bowler had been in the concussion protocol for 13 days, suffering the injury during the Browns final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Aug. 26.

According to a report from ESPN's Jake Trotter, Ward missed "several practices" before returning in a limited fashion this week. Ward was a full participant on Friday, per Trotter.

The 26-year-old is crucial to Cleveland's chances at a Week 1 win as one of the team's best defenders.

Despite missing three games during the 2022 campaign, Ward still tied for first on the Browns in passes defended (15) and fumble recoveries (two), while recording three interceptions as well. Both of Ward's fumble recoveries were returned for touchdowns last season, making him the only player in the NFL to accomplish that feat multiple times.

The Cleveland-Cincinnati clash is one of the biggest Week 1 matchups, as the Browns will look to get an early-season leg up on their division rivals.

With newly extended Joe Burrow back and healthy (and very rich), the Bengals would seem to have a great shot at winning their third consecutive AFC North title.

Cleveland, meanwhile, is trying to win their first division championship since the 1989 season.

Having Ward in the secondary to attempt to slow down Cincinnati's pair of star wide receivers in Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on Sunday gives the Browns a huge defensive boost and a much better chance of starting the year with a victory.
