Browns GM: Wentz, Goff deals won't influence view on Baker Mayfield

After a shaky 2019, Baker Mayfield got his career back on track last season, leading the Browns to their first postseason win since the 90s and nearly pulling off an upset of the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mayfield was impressive all year, keeping the offense steady even as they endured a variety of injuries, including Odell Beckham Jr. and Nick Chubb. Many believe that Mayfield may have even earned himself a big payday, but could Browns general manager Andrew Berry be hesitant to pay his quarterback after seeing the Rams and Eagles trade away Jared Goff and Carson Wentz prematurely?

In an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Berry said that what happened with those teams has no bearing on what the Browns will do in terms of paying Mayfield.

"I think it would maybe be a stretch to say that's going to serve as a cautionary tale or any type of blueprint for us," Berry said. "We'll make the best decision for us with the information we have."

The Browns are likely to pick up Mayfield's fifth-year option to ensure that he is at least with the team for the next two seasons. Then, they could decide to give Mayfield a larger, long-term extension or let him play through the option to assess whether or not they believe he's earned a big payday.
