The Cleveland Browns appear destined to break up with Baker Mayfield, even if they fail to land Deshaun Watson.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Wednesday that the Browns want “what they consider an adult” at the quarterback position, and that Mayfield does not fit that for them. Mortensen added that if the Browns fail to land Watson, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is a name to watch for the Browns.

At this stage, it seems quite clear that the Browns are ready to move on from Mayfield. They have not done anything to hide their Watson pursuit, though they apparently didn’t inform Mayfield beforehand.

The Browns were heavily linked to Garoppolo in 2017, before he ultimately landed with San Francisco. That was under a different regime, but if the Browns don’t get Watson and are serious about getting rid of Mayfield, he would make a lot of sense as a trade target.
