Browns QB Baker Mayfield has MRI, could miss Thursday game vs. Broncos

The Cleveland Browns had an absolutely brutal Sunday afternoon. They were crushed by the Arizona Cardinals 37-14 and had injuries added to that insult when running back Kareem Hunt (calf) and rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (ankle) were reportedly lost for at least a month of action. Even more worrisome, quarterback Baker Mayfield re-dislocated his left (non-throwing) shoulder after suffering that initial setback in Week 2, and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. also tweaked his shoulder.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Mayfield underwent an MRI on Monday, and the results of that scan will largely determine if he's cleared to start Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

"We’ll make sure to work through all of that in the next couple of days and obviously take what the medical staff says, what Baker in this case says, and we do that for all of our players," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Monday. "That’s making sure we make prudent decisions with all of these guys."

Stefanski continued: "With any injury, I’m not the medical expert so I’ll listen to the medical team here. And we listen to the player, with every single player here you treat them and you have a dialogue with them. You talk to the doctors and we’ll make, again, make good decisions and smart decisions with all of these guys."

Mayfield insisted following Sunday's loss that he will "absolutely" play in Thursday's battle between a pair of 3-3 teams, but Stefanski's comments suggest he's prepared to make the decision for his signal-caller and go to backup Case Keenum so that Mayfield can have some extra time to recover ahead of the matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Halloween.
