The Cleveland Browns entered the 2023 offseason with clear needs on the defensive side of the ball. While Deshaun Watson’s return was lackluster, it was the defense that really fell short in Cleveland last season.

Looking to address that, the team got busy early in free agency. Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and EDGE defender Ogbonnia Okoronkwo were two headline-grabbing additions that will bolster the defensive line alongside Myles Garrett. Juan Thornhill will boost the secondary at the safety position as well, leaving the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Browns’ defense should be much better in 2023 than it was in 2022. With Watson knocking off more of the rust, the offense should flow better as well. A key to that success is that the offensive line will be remaining intact.

One of the best under-the-radar signings of the offseason was Cleveland’s re-signing of center Ethan Pocic. Pocic wasn’t projected to be the starter last season, but when Nick Harris, who was, suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason opener, Pocic was thrust into the starting lineup.

He made the most of his opportunity, turning in a dominant performance. Pocic was truly one of the best centers in the NFL in 2022, finishing in the top five in pass-blocking win rate and run-blocking win rate.

With Pocic back in the mix, the Browns boast arguably the best interior offensive line in the league. Pocic is flanked by Pro Bowlers Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller at guard with Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin at the tackle spots.

That unit is among the best in the NFL and will make life much easier for Watson as he looks to get back on track in 2023. The luxury of leaning on Nick Chubb out of the backfield also exists, as the Browns should have no issues getting the running game going once again with Pocic leading the way at the center position.
