One of the best Buffalo Bills players seems ready to take his talents elsewhere in NFL free agency, especially if it is a state without an income tax.
The 2023 version of NFL free agency will offer quite a few notable talents that could be major difference-makers to teams around the league. One such player that could be up for grabs — assuming a franchise tag isn’t used on them — is Buffalo Bills Pro Bowler Jordan Poyer.
After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, Poyer landed with the Bills in 2017 and has become a staple of their defense ever since. In 2021 he hit a peak by earning All-Pro honors and scored a second-straight trip to the Pro Bowl this year as well. And at 31, the 10-year veteran enters the open market looking for the second and likely last long-term, big-money contract of his career.
It could be argued he is the best safety on this year’s market, and he is sure to have many teams interested in adding him to their roster. Obviously, money will be a key decider in where Poyer plays next season. However, the Buffalo Bills star made it clear on a recent edition of “The Jordan Poyer Podcast” what he actually takes home in his paycheck in the next deal will be key for this jump into NFL free agency.
“I’m excited for what’s to come. … A lot of people ask me, ‘Oh, if it wasn’t Buffalo, where would you go?’ I kind of ponder the question every once in a while. . . . I would love to go to a state that doesn’t take half my money. It’s crazy to me how taxes work. Some people will say, ‘You’re already making X amount of money.’ Taxes play a big part in all of our lives. . . . If it wasn’t Buffalo, it’d be nice to be warm. It would be nice to see the sun, maybe, every week or so, every other week at least.”

The teams that could take Jordan Poyer away from Buffalo Bills in NFL free agency
There are five states with professional football teams in the United States that do not have income tax: Texas, Florida, Washington, Tennessee and Nevada. The franchises among those states that would offer the warm weather Poyer is looking for are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders.
However, of those franchises, the only teams with a legitimate chance — via salary cap space — to give the Buffalo Bills star the money he is looking for are the Raiders and Texans. Considering his age and being on winning teams the last few years, if Las Vegas gets involved in the bidding war, there is a good chance the safety could be wearing silver and black next season.
