Buffalo sports columnist fired over sexist remarks on podcast

Longtime Buffalo sports columnist Jerry Sullivan is no longer associated with the Niagara Gazette.

"In light of comments made by contributing columnist Jerry Sullivan on a podcast Monday, the Niagara Gazette and Lockport Union Sun & Journal have made the decision to part ways with Sullivan," the Niagara Gazette explained in a statement released Tuesday. "We do not condone misogynistic, insensitive or derogatory comments in any form. GNN Sports will remain committed to providing readership with accurate, fair and quality stories."

Per Brandon Contes of Awful Announcing and Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Sullivan made his career-altering statements during a Monday appearance on the "Trainwreck Tonight" local podcast. Sullivan and the show's hosts took a question from a listener named Amy who said she "thought the aim was to get viewers, not to turn them away." That apparently set Sullivan off.

"Women, be better than this," Sullivan responded to the comment. "The worst fans really are the women. They don’t get critical journalism. They’re all wannabe cheerleaders. You know what I mean? It’s always … It’s a dangerous avenue to go down to criticize women in general, because they’re better than men generally, but they don’t get it as fans."

Trainwreck Sports condemned Sullivan's comments via Twitter on Tuesday morning:

Last December, Sullivan generated headlines when he left Bills defensive players Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer fuming after he asked them if they were "embarrassed" Buffalo lost to the New England Patriots in a game where Patriots quarterback Mac Jones threw only three passes. As noted by Pat McMahon of WBUF, Sullivan seemed to annoy Bills quarterback Josh Allen with a question following the club's 20-12 win over the New York Jets this past Sunday:

According to Sullivan's profile on the WIVB Channel 4 website, he worked for the Buffalo News from 1989 until 2018. He's also contributed for WIVB.
